"Friends" (1994)
7/10
2008-06-05 23:53
Decently funny for the conventional sitcom model. The characters got old and stale, eventually becoming caricatures of themselves. Everybody sleeps with everybody else until they're all more than friends--they become an incestuous blob of unfunny. Still, there was a time where it was worthwhile viewing, so I'll be generous.

"The Simpsons" (1989)
10/10
2008-06-05 18:03
What is there to say about this show that hasn't already been said countless times before? Revolutionary, classic comedy. Even the hyperactive recent stuff is better than most television comedy these days, so it remains at a 10.

"Upright Citizens Brigade" (1998)
8/10
2008-06-05 17:52
Can you review television shows with this program? Probably. Anyway, Upright Citizens Brigade has two things going for it in the realm of sketch comedy. 1: The sketches generally come together in the end to form something bigger and funnier. 2: They avoid chronic SNL syndrome, with only limited character/joke reuse. More hit than miss, and definitely worth picking up on DVD.

There's nothing particularly bad about this movie, but there's nothing particularly good either. It's almost as if this movie was never made (and maybe it shouldn't have been).

You know. The average casino hustle movie. I found it enjoyable and thought the performances were all adequate to good.

Aladdin (1992)
9/10
2008-06-06 00:04
Part of Disney's awesome streak of animation between 1990 and 1997 or so when we started going to Treasure Planet or whatever. This is actually the ideal role for Williams, who gets to do what he always does and have it make more sense because he's al mystical and blue. Otherwise, there's an odd mixture of speaking and nonspeaking animals, as well as great songs. Almost perfect.

Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1995) (V)
6/10
2008-06-05 23:58
I bet Disney regrets marrying off Aladdin and Jasmine now that straight-to-video is the rule instead of the exception. This was clearly meant to end the "trilogy" of Aladdin movies. Williams is back as the Genie (he wasn't missed when Dan Castalanetta replaced him). The story isn't as entertaining as either of the first two films, although kudos to Disney for introducing new elements instead of retreading Jafar again.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
9/10
2008-06-05 18:06
One of those rare silly-comedies that actually strikes gold with its nonsequitor humor. Most of the jokes stick, and the ones that don't go down in glorious flames.

Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001)
9/10
2008-06-05 23:47
Spielberg's underrated masterpiece. All the lead roles are filled expertly. You can look at the film any number of times and come up with any number of interpretations. Is David the protagonist? Selfish antagonist? Unfortunate victim of his own programming. John Williams turns in his best score of the 2000's. All in all, a flawed but wonderful film.

Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)
6/10
2008-06-05 18:14
The retreaded jokes are starting to get stale, and there are not enough new jokes to fill the void. Even though it's full of the same old jokes, something seems "off" between this film and its predecessors. Funny enough to watch, but not to keep.

-

Baby Mama (2008)
7/10
2008-06-05 07:48
Funny if unmemorable. A few weeks later I can't remember a single joke. Still, I remember laughing. I adore Tina Fey and admire Amy Poehler's comic abilities. Greg Kinnear turns in his typical Greg-Kinnearean performance, which is to say that he is good but not revolutionary.

Batman Begins (2005)
10/10
2008-07-23 00:05
An awesome comeback of the franchise, which plays more as a crime drama than a superhero movie. Not a weak link among the cast and crew. A well-made movie.

Batman: Gotham Knight (2008) (V)
6/10
2008-09-06 19:22
A collection of six "anime" Batman shorts. A lot of good ideas, but a lot of lame execution. Beautifully animated, though. Instead of balancing the mystique of Batman, the torture of Bruce Wayne, and comic-book action, each short really takes a look at one facet. Only one short--Deadshot--is worth watching, for its delicate balance of all the aforementioned issues.

Be Kind Rewind (2008)
7/10
2008-06-05 17:59
The "sweded" films are hilarious, and there are some good points about the value of cheap, personal art over impersonal pap. In the end, it's a bit uneven. Still worth a watch, though.

Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991)
8/10
2008-08-11 23:33
The story and the ending are pretty good and entertaining, but a lot of the jokes fall flat (either as retreads of bits from Excellent Adventure or just as terribly dated attempts to create slang). Still, a totally station movie to watch.

Bill (2007)
7/10
2008-09-15 23:40
The first time I've ever seen Jessica Alba act worth a damn. Not to say that it was a great movie, but it had a decent enough cast and enough fun moments to make it worth seeing. Between this and Dark Knight, I would make the love to Aaron Eckhart.

Blades of Glory (2007)

About what you could expect from a Mighty Ducks movie. It seemed kind of lame when the new coach unveiled the "Ducks" jerseys. Maybe it's time to grow up--you can play like ducks under any team name, btw.

Death Proof (2007)

Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999)
7/10
2008-06-05 17:54
More of these jokes hit than fall flat. Watch it for the montages of bad dates. Probably used up all of the best "male gigolo" ideas in this one, because...well, we all saw the previews for the sequel.

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
10/10
2008-06-26 23:02
Spielberg's best. No matter how many times I watch it, I'll still get choked up during the children's escape to the spaceship at the end. The perfect mix of movie and music. John Williams really outdoes himself.

7/10
2008-09-15 23:37

Flubber (1997)
4/10
2008-06-05 23:50
Silly movie, but I didn't really like Flubber as a character. It should have been a mere substance instead of some little dancing guy. Might as well watch The Absent Minded Professor, which excels with the same plot.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
7/10
2008-06-05 07:51
More hit-or-miss than a lot of the recent "From the Guys that Brought You The 40-Year-Old Virgin" fare (Walk Hard, Knocked Up, Superbad). Jonah Hill's role as a waiter is one-note and annoying after the first of many appearances. Mila Kunis is cute as a button and I would like to make her my bride. Jack McBrayer (Kenneth from "30 Rock") is cute as a button and I would also take him as my bride. Anyway, this was a funny movie and worth watching again, but it's not one I'll be adding to my DVD shelf with some of those other Apatow-crew flicks.

Funny Games U.S. (2007)
10/10
2008-06-29 09:17
Quite possibly the best movie I've seen in some time. It comes off like a bit of a Pinter play--nonstop, terrifying tension is contributed by everything from the acting to the sound design to the colors to the set. It plays with genre conventions. It is the scariest thing I've seen in years, which goes to show what you can accomplish with a great production crew, even omitting the typical "scary movie" musical stingers and jump-scares.

Futurama: Bender's Big Score (2007) (V)
10/10
2008-06-29 23:05
A bit self referential, but it works )outside of a few "we're back" jokes that seem to come right out of the rehabilitated Family Guy's playbook). The jokes hit and the voices are wonderful--especially John DiMaggio's Bender, who is in top form here.

Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs...
9/10
2008-06-29 23:04
A great Futurama movie without all of the "hey, we're back!" todo from "Bender's Big Score." Full of laughs, love, and David Cross. In the end, probably not as good as "Big Score" but better than most comedy out there.

Get Smart (2008)

Happy Feet (2006)

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
8/10
2008-06-29 10:03
An okay effort, although it came from probably the hardest book of the series to adapt. There's no intensified throughline, so the director smartly sticks to the Triwizard Tournament and makes this like a sports movie with magic.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix...
8/10
2008-06-29 09:55
A pretty good adaptation of a very long book. The "Dumbledore's Army" stuff is great, as is the raid on the Ministry. Helena Bonham Carter was a well-cast addition to the series. Not too bad at all.

-

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone...
7/10
2008-06-29 09:34
The first and the worst of the Harry Potter franchise (to date). Chris Columbus seems to want to cram every little detail of the books into this movie, which would be all fine and good if all of these details worked on film. Take a retroactive page from the later directors (or, for that matter, Peter Jackson) and make a movie that stays faithful to the SPIRIT of the source material as opposed to the material itself.

Hellboy (2004)
8/10

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
8/10
2008-08-18 21:48
Can't decide whether or not it was better than the first. The effects were better. The villains weren't quite as cool, but probably had more meaningful motiviation. A worthy successor to the first film and a heck of a lot of fun.

High Fidelity (2000)
9/10
2008-06-05 17:58
One of my favorite rock and roll movies, and definitely a great portrait of a person about my age coming to a crossroads in their life. Funny where it needs to be, poignant where it can be. Cusack and Black are great.

Home Alone (1990)
9/10

Hook (1991)
9/10
2008-06-05 18:19
Most people I know hate this movie, but I love it for the most part. Robin Williams is not the rubber-faced cokehead that he normally plays in kids' movies, and his rediscovery of childhood manages to be poignant yet still full of pirates. Dustin Hoffman is tremendous as Hook, by the way.

Horton Hears a Who! (2008)
7/10
2008-06-05 17:38
Horton was a surprisingly good movie. Jim Carry does his usual thing, and the wheels spin. Otherwise, Carrell turns in a decent vocal performance; the animation is different enough to stand out from the norm; the music is good. The story is passable, which is a surprise after expansions of The Grinch and Cat in the Hat fell flat.

Hotel Chevalier (2007)
10/10
2008-06-26 22:46
This short film was by far the best part of The Darjeeling Limited. Filled with melancholy, amazing performances by both Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman, and enough style to keep you intrigued by the simple story.

Hulk (2003)
7/10
2008-07-12 22:41
A lot better than people give it credit for, and certainly stylistically interesting. I could have used a more solid villain--the genesis of this film's baddie is quick and bizarre.

Independence Day (1996)
8/10
2008-06-29 09:47

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the...
8/10
2008-06-05 06:28
It's not up to the level of the classic serial-inspired adventures, but it's a fun trip to the fifties with some characters that we have always loved and others that we will grow to tolerate. As silly as it is to see a person swinging from the vines like a monkey, it's no worse than seeing a 60-year-old Indy gracefully running across ceiling beams in a warehouse, a rollercoaster chase between two mine cars, or a choreographed basket-chase "shell game" through the streets of Cairo. John Williams' score is pretty good, although a lot of the new material is far more forgettable than incidental music from the previous films (and, of course, more forgettable than all of the returning themes).

Insomnia (2002/I)

Iron Man (2008)
9/10
2008-06-05 07:38
Just about everything I could have asked for out of an Iron Man movie. It captures the spirit that the Fantastic Four movies were trying to go for but failed miserably, and that can probably be attributed to the casting of people with actual acting chops in all the major roles. I'd catch this one again.

Jack (1996)
7/10
2008-06-05 23:54
An entertaining piece about a child in a man's body. Done before with Big and numerous other flicks. This is entertaining enough to merit at least a stick-around viewing if it's on television.

Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)
6/10
2008-07-27 23:25
Worth catching in 3D, but probably not worth catching in regular ol' 2D. If you want a fun, dumb Brendan Fraser actioner, catch one of the Mummy flicks.

Jumanji (1995)
7/10
2008-06-05 23:55
The effects are dated and the acting is often very much a victim of said effects. Still, the premise is sound and they managed to cram a lot of fantastical and entertaining things into this movie.

Jurassic Park (1993)
10/10
2008-06-26 23:18
Amazing film. Some of the special effects are dated (Brachiosaurus), but the raptors and T-Rex are still scary as hell today. Williams' score is great (especially the B-theme, Journey to the Island). Goldblum is hilarious and the kids actually do a good job. Can't recommend this one enough.
0.3

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
8/10
2008-09-01 23:08
This movie pretty much delivers what the title says, which I can't say for Werewolves on Wheels. Every clown cliche is played with (sometimes cleverly) in a horror movie setting, and there are a lot of fun deaths.

King Kong (2005)
8/10
2008-06-05 18:04
It's amazing what an additional action sequence or two can get you. What seemed a bit bloated in its 3-hour theatrical version actually feels well-balanced in its expanded DVD cut. The performances are all great, as are the effects. It's got some pacing issues, but it's definitely worth picking up.

2008-09-15 23:38
Embarrassingly, I've never seen the original. As far as modern vampire movies go, though, this one is pretty good. Its tongue seems to be firmly in its cheek, and Feldman has a great line at the end that makes the whole ordeal worth it.

Melvin Goes to Dinner (2003)
6/10
